DESIGN: A RUG TO CALL YOUR OWN 

This workshop will allow you to create your very own bespoke carpet, handmade to order in northern Afghanistan, following the design and size of your choice. From a simple idea to a complex brief, our carpet workshop will help turn your concepts into a reality. Our in-house designer will accompany you and take your initial idea, sketch or painting to digital artwork to hand-crafted production, through a process blending creativity, ancient skill and new technology.

Carpet weaving is at the heart of Afghanistan’s heritage. It is one of the only places in the world which still produces high quality handwoven carpets but four decades of conflict have isolated the artisans from the rest of the world. By producing your carpet in Afghanistan with ISHKAR you will help spread awareness about the country’s rich and unique craft traditions while generating more employment for Afghan artisans at a time when economic opportunities are desperately needed.

Who is this workshop for?

This is a creative and unique workshop aimed at anyone wanting a more interactive experience of creating a bespoke carpet, whilst supporting one of the most luxurious and rich craft traditions in the world. Our carpet workshops are also a great gift to offer your loved ones, for a house move, as a wedding present, or to mark a milestone such as a birthday or anniversary.

What does it entail?

This workshop will allow you to create your very own bespoke carpet, handmade to order in northern Afghanistan, following the design and size of your choice.

How much does it cost?

What is the format of the workshop?

The workshop takes place over a 2/3 hour session led by our Creative Director to determine the concept design of your carpet. We will start with an introduction on carpet weaving history, techniques and processes in Afghanistan, and talk a little bit about the different styles the carpet could take. The rest of the session will be used to formulate a design proposal for your carpet. Once a design has been agreed on, ISHKAR will translate that into a final technical drawing which will be later on shared with the carpet weavers for production.

How large can the carpet be?

As production is entirely made to order, the carpet can be made up to any size you wish over 1.4m x 2m.

How long does production take?

The carpet will take a team of three weavers up to 4 months to weave, and 1 month to quality control, finish and ship.
