Story

The Design

These waistcoats are perfectly designed to cope with Afghanistan’s brutally cold winters, and fierce summers, and are traditionally worn by Afghan men throughout the year. We’ve updated the traditional waistcoat by pairing soft wool with a contemporary lining, perfect for wearing casually during the day, or for smarter evening wear. They are cut to fit all sizes, large and small.

The Tradition

Waistcoats are a typical item of Afghan menswear, often worn with a shalwar kameezan outfit that consists of a long tunic and a matching pair of baggy trousers. The waistcoat may change its form depending on where it is made, when it is being worn (daily, festival, etc), and by whom. The Afghan term for this garment, waskat, hints strongly at its English origins, inspired by European waistcoats that initially appeared in India in the 18th century via the British East India Company and similar European trading companies.

waistcoat

This was such a good purchase, I absolutely love everything about it. It can be worn anywhere.
There is something rare and special about well crafted objects, one can intuit the hands and minds behind the creation.
Thank you Ishkar!

High Quality

Given how difficult it was to deliver from Kabul for obvious reasons, this waistcoat is a triumph. It can be really smart and not smart but its so comfortable. I cannot recommend it more..

Perfect for an adventure or a drink in the City!

I simply love this waistcoat and live in in it all year so much so that I have the garment in all three colours. It is perfect out on the adventure road or in a smart bar in the city with a crisp shirt and pocket square. The artisan craftsmanship is superb and it is great to be able to support its continuation in these most difficult of times.

Pleasant contacts, solid waistcoat

My waistcoat got stuck for a while in Afghanistan when the US pulled out, but the people at Ishkar were very pleasant about it, keeping me up to date, and of course I didn't see my wardrobe as taking priority. The waistcoat is smart and solid and exactly what I wanted - an extra layer for chilly weather and, now it's warming up, something that will do instead of a coat. So far I've worn it with jeans or winter check trousers, but I may try a shalvar-e kordi as the weather warms up. The finish is nice, but I did have to re-sew all the buttons on - I'm not sure there's a single brand or supplier capable of sewing buttons on fast these days!

Have barely taken it off!

I'm delighted and have barely taken the waistcoat off! It is surprisingly warm and is cut such that depending on what else you wear it can be both informal and smart
